The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Although he hasn’t had many opportunities to showcase his talents on the field so far this season, Braden River High kicker Kadin Kerns continues to impress. He recently was selected to IMG Madden Football Academy’s All-Madden Team — one of only 27 players from across the country to earn the distinction. Kerns was the only player from the East County to receive the honor. Here’s an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What’s been your career highlight so far?
Definitely last year against Winter Haven. I kicked the game-winning field goal in double overtime to win.

What are your college plans?
I’m still looking right now — (Florida Atlantic University) maybe. I definitely want to kick (in college).

What’s been your farthest field goal?
In practice, I hit a 66. In a game, probably about 40.

When did you start playing football?
I started when I was 8 years old — the Bulldogs and Mighty Mites.

What’s it like having your father (assistant coach Greg Kerns) as one of your coaches?
It’s great. He’s been coaching me since the Bulldogs, so it’s normal.

What other activities do you like?
Hanging out with my friends, going to the beach, playing volleyball.

Who is your role model?
My dad because I can talk to him about everything.

What’s your secret to success?
I like having the pressure on me.

What’s your advice to someone who wants to start kicking?
Get your confidence up, and repetition (is key).
