Athlete of the Week: Demardre Patterson

Sophomore running back Demardre Patterson rushed for 70 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns while leading The Out-of-Door Academy to a 55-0 victory over Saint Stephen’s in the annual Headmaster’s Cup Nov. 4. Patterson, who was named the game’s MVP, has rushed for more than 500 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

How did it feel knowing you played a role in your team’s big win?
It made me feel so good, because we’ve been down for so long.

What’s your first year at ODA been like?
It’s a new experience.

What’s the toughest part about being a running back?
Taking the hits. I’ve never been hit as hard as these kids.

What do you enjoy the most about football?
It’s like a family sport. We rely on each other.

How did you get into football?
I started playing when I was 9 years old. My stepdad told me about it.

Who is your biggest role model?
(ODA quarterback) Evan Wilson. I like his swagger. He’s so laid-back and really cool.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
If football doesn’t work out, then I want to be a businessman and do something in economics.

Do you have any siblings?
I have four sisters and one brother.

Do you have a favorite movie?
I love the movie “The Blind Side.” I can sort of relate to the things he’s been through.

Do you play any other sports?
I run track. I’m very fast.

Do you prefer football or track?
Track. You don’t get hit. You just run.

If you could play one other sport for a day, what would it be?
Soccer. You get to run. I love to run.

Do you have a favorite subject?
Science. It’s interesting with the different molecules and how the body works.
