Arts Center offers full palette for the season

This season, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, will continue its “Ageless Creativity” theme. But even though the aging theme continues, don’t expect the same old show. The show will run in the Cultural Media Room simultaneously with the “Common Ground” exhibit in the Joan M. Durante Gallery, which, together, will make up the “Connexions” show.

“Last year, we juxtaposed ‘Ageless Creativity’ with ‘Aging in America’ (by photojournalist Ed Kashi),” said Jane Buckman, executive director of the Arts Center. “This year we’re going with the same theme but we’re emphasizing the multigenerational aspect of art.”

The “Common Ground” show will feature the work of Joseph Arnegger, Tim Jaeger and Jeff Schwartz, who attended Ringling together and were instrumental in founding s/ART/q.

“Their work is expressive, large and there’s an emotional impact when you see their art,” Buckman said. “It will be very high-energy for the Durante Gallery.”

This year’s “Ageless Creativity” show will honor visual artists Eleanor Merritt and Jack Nolan; architect Carl Abbott; actress Carolyn Michel; and filmmaker/composer Diane Colson.

Both exhibits run from Oct. 7 through Nov. 18. And the exhibits are just the beginning of a packed 2010-11 season at the Arts Center. In addition to offering a variety of exhibits, classes and workshops, the Arts
Center will change formats for its spring jazz concerts. Instead of featuring monthly “Jazz at the Center” concerts, the Arts Center will hold a single jazz concert during which Longboat Key musician Al Hixon will perform, and will also add a new series called “Sounds of Music.” Concert themes, during which audience members can participate and even sing along, will include “music and harmony” and “music and lyrics.”

“We are having a lot of what we offered in the past, but we will be offering new programming that hasn’t been done out here,” Buckman said.
