Florida Blood Service, a division of OneBlood, Inc.  announced Riverview High School won the School Blood Drive Award Monday, March 18, at the 16th Annual Awards of Excellence Banquet in Washington D.C.

The competition is sponsored by America’s Blood Center and the award will be presented to student donors at a recognition ceremony Thursday, April 4 at Riverview High School.

In the past five years, Riverview students, staff, participating alumni and parents have given 7,011 blood donations. The school holds five drives a year and has eight bloodmobiles at each drive. Principal Bob Heilman has donated eight gallons of blood alone.

The Student Government Association sponsors and promotes the blood drives under the leadership of faculty advisor Laura Hike. The blood drive committee recruits student donors to give blood, coordinates the donor flow during the drives and holds a cookout to feed those who donate.
