‘Buy for the view’ has always been the mantra of Sarasota real estate. When you live in a beautiful place, you want to look at it. And the choices are certainly there — everything from a golf fairway or a nature preserve up to the most prized (and most pricey): open water and lots of it. Here’s a selection of spectacular views currently on the market.

1. Downtown View
37 Sunset Drive, No. 53

Most downtown condos have nice views, but this unit in that cute pink building on Sunset Drive near the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota may have the nicest of all — the open bay in front of you, with the bridge off to the left at just the perfect angle, plus what may well be the prettiest balcony in town to enjoy it all from. And if that’s not enough, this corner unit also has spectacular views to the north, all the way to Anna Maria Island. The unit itself is a renovation of two combined apartments, with four bedrooms and four baths in a generous 2,580 square feet. The finishes are high quality, with lots of granite and porcelain tile throughout. The location is perfect—the most exclusive part of downtown, yet tucked away for privacy. There’s even a small private beach. It’s priced at $1,095,000.

2. Bay View
4401 Mangrove Place

People who have lived here for years tend to prefer bay views. They leave the dramatic Gulf views to the newcomers and the part timers and choose, instead, the most peaceful and tranquil setting they can find. This almost-new home (built in 2005) on Siesta Key looks out over calm water toward mangrove islands and passing boat traffic, with the mainland horizon in the far distance. The home itself, designed by Cliff Scholtz, has a sophisticated, coastal feeling: lots of wood paneling, black-walnut floors, and exposed beams. It also has several fireplaces and, even, a claw-foot tub. There’s lots of room for everybody — four bedrooms, five baths, in more than 5,000 square feet. It’s set on three quarters of an acre with frontage on both the bay and a canal. There’s also 71-foot dock. The price? $3.9 million.

3. Beach View
2675 Gulf of Mexico Drive

The ultimate Sarasota view? Turquoise Gulf water and a white sand beach, of course, facing west for the glorious sunsets. This turnkey furnished apartment on Longboat Key offers a multi-million dollar view at a great price: $689,000. It’s got almost 1,900 square feet, with two, large bedrooms (the master has two walk-in closets), a good-sized kitchen with granite counters, laundry room, and of course, that incredible view from every room. In a smaller boutique style building (20 owners) with a pool and tennis court, it’s a short walk from the Avenue of the Flowers shopping center. There’s also live-in management, a plus for part timers.
