Editorial: Arts & Entertainment Writer

Love arts and entertainment? Sarasota, Fla., has a vibrant arts community, and the Arts and Entertainment writer at the Observer Media Group is tasked with becoming fully immersed in it to cover all things A&E in our weekly section, Diversions. This person must strive to get stories, photos and videos no one else will have, and tell them in way that reveals subjects and delights readers. It is a position that requires creativity, voice and vision to turn content ideas into an entertaining reality.

In addition to writing a 1,000-word feature story and two 500-word smaller features (typically profile and event previews) each week, this position is also responsible for covering events and maintaining a running calendar of arts and entertainment happenings. And, this A&E writer attends many events, including theater, dance, art and other show openings, to glean story ideas and create and maintain relationships with artists and art figures in the community.

This person will also be responsible for managing calendar listings and writing stories for Season, a quarterly magazine produced by the Observer Media Group.

With so much going on, the editor also posts regular updates to the Web and shoots and edits a video a week to complement a story.

The idea candidate:
•  has an understanding, interest or passion for visual art, dance, theater and music
•  has strong writing skills with journalism story-telling experience
•  has experience in photography and videography
•  has 2 to 5 years' experience writing arts and entertainment features/profiles
•  is a self-starter who can network in the arts community to find unique angles for exclusive stories
•  possesses great organizational skills to multitask and meet weekly deadlines

We’re looking for a self-starter who will work out of our Lakewood Ranch office on Main Street and quickly become the go-to person for all news and enterprise stories related to East County. You’ll report on local government and politics, real estate/development, tourism, insurance, breaking news. The position offers the opportunity to maximize the impact of your writing and reporting.

In 2012 and 2013, Local Media Association named two of our newspapers, the Longboat Observer and Sarasota Observer, the top newspapers in North America for their respective categories.

The Longboat Observer community reporter/photographer covers a mix of community, school, business and religious events, as well as tells the stories of the people behind them.

We are looking for a driven, enthusiastic and creative journalist to join our company. The ideal candidate will not be afraid to jump in and immerse himself or herself in the community and get to know the residents and local issues. Our multimedia reporters use their excellent writing, photography and video skills to tell stories in a unique way.

The Longboat Observer is part of the Observer Media Group, a family-owned and operated multimedia company based in Sarasota, Fla. Responsibilities
• Cover community events and take compelling, creative photos
• Produce in-depth photo essays from your coverage area
• Plan multimedia content to package with stories
• Write weekly feature stories on community issues/events and residents
• Upload photo events to the website/Facebook; help maintain the Observer’s social media pages
• Contribute content, including photos and stories, to special sections throughout the year
• Serve as an outstanding representative of the paper in the community
