Junior Business Reporter

The Business Observer is seeking a full-time junior reporter to be based out of its Sarasota headquarters and cover the Sarasota-Manatee area.

The Business Observer covers entrepreneurs, CEO and business leaders from Tampa to Naples each week. But just because we’re a weekly doesn’t mean we’re not always churning out content. Whether it’s for the Web or print, the pace is fast and the stories are fun. For example, check out the microsite we did for our 40 under 40 issue: businessobserver4040.com

We write intelligent stories for C-suite readers. We don’t chase news — we explain trends, strategies and how business leaders are finding success in their industry. Our readers turn to us to learn lessons that can help them in their work and find out who’s doing what in our coverage area. To write for CEOs you need to think like one, and you need to know what they care about most. In fact, that’s our in-house motto: “Boss needs to know.”

We are looking for new talent to help us beef up our daily Web presence and bring new ideas on how to approach our print stories. The ideal candidate will have experience covering business, and will know the basics — things like how to read income statements and how to glean important information from complex and jargon-filled press releases. This candidate must also be a business news junky. This is a publication dedicated entirely to business coverage — we want someone as passionate about telling the stories of companies and their leaders as we are.

The Business Observer is a paid subscription, weekly business publication of the Observer Media Group, which has nine community newspapers in Florida. Check us out online at BusinessObserverFL.com.

Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. Full benefits included.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 clips to Executive Editor Kat Hughes at khughes@businessobserverfl.com. No phone calls please.

News Reporter

Do you love to report on local news? Would you love reporting even more if you could do it footsteps away from the beach?

If so, you could be the right candidate for the news reporter position at the Longboat Observer.

We’re looking for a self-starter who will work out of our Longboat Key office and quickly become the go-to person for all news related to Longboat Key. You’ll report on local government and politics, real estate/development, tourism, insurance, breaking news and, yes, the occasional tropical storm or hurricane while wracking up lots of front-page bylines. The Longboat Observer has a 95% market saturation on the Key, so the position offers the opportunity to maximize the impact of your writing and reporting.

The right candidate must be able to develop a network of sources who range from elected officials to neighborhood residents. With our hyper-local coverage, we need a reporter who can become a part of the community to discover and report what matters most to our readers. Photography/video skills are a plus.

If you’re looking for a company in which to grow and continue to build your reporting skills, this is the place for you. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic and has a strong desire to continue to learn and be a part of a young, energetic team. Although our print papers are weekly, we are a daily news operation, posting breaking news and features on our website, YourObserver.com.

Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. Candidates with three to five years' experience preferred. Full benefits are included.

Please email your resume, including references, three to five clips and a note explaining why you’re the ideal candidate for the job to Managing Editor Robin Hartill at rhartill@yourobserver.com.

News Innovator

In this business, if you’re not innovating, you’re dying. We at the Observer Media Group know this. In fact, it’s our vision statement: to innovate and elevate.

That’s why we’re looking for a passionate, creative individual to help lead fresh approaches to our weekly, hyperlocal news content in print and online. That means being the executive editor’s right-hand guy or gal to dream up new ideas for our news section and make sure they get executed in a way that informs, surprises and delights our audience of educated, affluent readers.

This position requires someone with spot-on editing instincts, who can work with our reporters and managing editors to transform a piece of lackluster copy into a shining package or story. This person sees the possibilities in how stories can be reported, designed and complemented with art and graphics to create relevant content that’s engaging and entertaining. At the Observer, there’s no news too small, so we have fun presenting 100% local content in a variety of ways.

We don’t chase daily news in print — we leave that to the Web. Which means every week, our print product has to be full of relevant “day-after” stories that have a unique angle and offer something our competitors can’t. Our goal is to give readers something they can’t wait to read each week. And, we have some experience doing it.

The position is based in our headquarters in sunny Sarasota, Fla. It's a great place to work and live. Plus, the community is a hyperlocal journalist's dream: We have an involved readership, a plentitude of neighborhood news and local government gadflies galore.

Must-haves include:

Minimum of three to five years' experience editing at a newspaper or magazine
Excellent copy-editing skills, including knowledge of all things AP style
Excellent news judgment for a weekly audience
A wicked sense of humor
A hard worker who’s not afraid to try new things
Great leadership skills and the ability to show others by doing
Ability to collaborate and work well with a team of young reporters and editors
A passion to think outside of the box and create unique content every week
An eye for design
An obsession with improvement and an unparalleled commitment to excellence

The position is full time with full benefits, including health care, vision, dental, life insurance and paid time off. Pay is commensurate with experience.

Sound like fun? Send an email to Executive Editor Kat Hughes at khughes@yourobserver.com telling her why you are the perfect fit for the job. Put "News Innovator" in the subject line. No phone calls, please.

Please include a resume and 3-5 relevant clips.

Sports Reporter

At the Observer, we don’t write gamers. Instead, we focus on the stories behind the score. We want the human interest angle behind the state championship volleyball team — or the football team that didn’t win a single game all season. We want stories readers will love to read, even if they don’t follow sports.

The Observer group is seeking a sports reporter to cover seven high schools in the Sarasota, Fla., area. As a weekly, we use our website and social media to push out scores and timely updates, while in print we work to tell the stories that drive the drama on the field. We want a reporter who can navigate through the cliches often found in sports coverage to tell us more about the players and the dynamics going on beyond the games. This person will also be able to take ownership of the sports beat and cultivate relationships with coaches to get the good stuff readers can’t find anywhere else. We want someone who loves sports and the stories involved and is passionate about trying new things to craft exciting coverage each week.

On this sports beat, the possibilities are endless for great stories, new approaches and interesting packages. Our ideal candidate will be a super multitasker who can manage his or her time well between all the different sports and schools. This person will also be a self-starter who can do it all — take pictures, write stories, tweet and maybe even shoot a video. Attention to detail, collaborative attitude, great sense of humor, knowledge of AP style and clean copy are must-haves.

The job entails writing and shooting pictures for features of various lengths in print each week, covering games and writing highlight recaps and posting score updates and news on social media and the website.

At the Observer, we do what it takes to get the job done, which means this position may also cover news or community events as needed.

If you’re a sports reporter excited about the opportunity to craft your own beat and become the go-to person for sports in our area, email a resume, cover letter and 3-5 clips to Deputy Executive Editor Jessica Luck at jluck@yourobserver.com. No phone calls please. Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. Full benefits are included.
